King Papers Never Sold At Sotheby's auction

Remember back in 2003 when Dexter King announced a 7,000-piece collection of the writings of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., which had sat nearly four decades in his widow's basement, was going to be placed on the sellers block at a New York auction house? Well, the documents never sold.

The package was appraised at $30 million dollars, was scheduled for a private sale and the King family hoped to get at least $20 million for it. The idea behind doing this in a private sale was to allow the family more control over who would be allowed to purchase the property.

As it stands today, April 25, 2006--the documents are still available for sale. Managing the transaction is Sotheby's in New York. For more information, one only needs to contact the company's press office.

My hope is that the documents are purchased by a University or Library. If purchased by a private collector, I pray that collector leaves the collection in the hands of one of the above. I believe this is the right thing to do because the King Children broke their trust with Black America when they snubbed Harry Belafonte during their mothers funeral.

Mexican Authorities Shutdown Clinic Where King Dies

Mexican authorities have shut down the clinic where Coretta Scott King died last Tuesday. However, no information is available as to why the facility has been closed.

Suspicion about the facility and it's practices mounted after the death of the 78-year-old Civil Rights Icon. Noted for holistic and non-traditional medical treatments, The Santa Monica Health Institute has become a magnet for those afflicted with cancer and other chronic ailments. Founded in 1983 by Dr. Kurt W. Donsbach, sources reveal that most of those the clinic attracts are cancer patients. King was suffering from late-stage ovarian cancer.

The US Embassy in Mexico confirmed the closing and said that they were currently assisting with the relocation of other American patients. So far there is no word on whether anyone at the clinic is accused of wrong doing. According to reports, Mexican authorities have been reviewing the operations of a number of rehabilitative centers over the course of a year and some have been closed.

Coretta Scott King

The passing of Mrs. King is a reminder to all of us that the legends of our past and their great works are slipping from our grasp in record speed. And as they leave us, it becomes clear that our children do not have a frame of reference for the pain so many endured in order for them to have the opportunities that they do--especially those in education. The very freedoms and privileges that King and others fought, bled, sacrificed and died for are being squandered by our youth. But they are not solely to blame, we are.

Our children act this way because we have not passionately demanded otherwise. I am personally ashamed.
